Holiday calculator FAQ
How many days of paid holiday are employees entitled to?
The number of paid holidays to which an employee is entitled may vary depending on the employer's policy and the laws of the country in which the employee is located.
In the UK, employees are entitled to at least 28 days of paid annual leave per year, including public holidays. Part-time employees may exercise this right on a pro rata basis.
In the United States, the federal government does not set a specific number of paid vacation days, while some European countries require at least 20 paid vacation days per year.
Can an employee request bereavement leave?
Many employers allow employees to take bereavement leave. The length of leave and whether it is paid or unpaid depends on the employer's policies and the employee's relationship with the deceased.
In the UK, employees are entitled to carry over up to 4 weeks of annual leave to the following year if they are unable to take it for reasons such as illness or maternity leave. Employers may choose to offer a more generous transfer policy.
Can employees take time off for their children's school activities?
In some countries, such as the United States, employers are required to give employees time off to attend children's school activities, such as parent-teacher conferences. The length of the period and whether it is paid or unpaid depends on employer policy and local laws.
Employees in the UK can claim annual leave at any time, but employers can refuse the claim if it is unreasonable or disrupts the business. Employers must also notify employees if they wish to require annual leave to be taken at a specific time, e.g. during shutdown.
Can employees take unpaid leave?
In many countries, employers are required to provide employees with unpaid leave for certain reasons, such as illness, family care, or to care for a new child. The length of leave and the specific reasons for which employees can take unpaid leave can vary depending on the employer's policies and local laws.
Can employees carry over unused holiday entitlement from one year to the next?
Again, it depends on company policy. Some companies allow employees to carry over unused vacation entitlement, while others require it to be used or forfeited before the end of the year.
What happens to an employee's leave entitlement if they resign or are terminated?
Once again, this will depend on the company's policy. Some companies will pay out unused leave entitlement upon termination, while others will not.
Can an employee take leave for any reason, or are there restrictions?
This will depend on company policies and the laws of the jurisdictions in which the company operates. Some jurisdictions require employers to provide certain types of leave (such as sick or parental leave), while others do not. In addition, some companies may have their own policies regarding when and why employees can take time off.
